Smart Airbag Safety Questioned
Original Publish Date - September 2009

The Center for Auto Safety has questioned the effectiveness of smart airbags after major recalls of the product by some auto manufacturers. BMW and Hyundai recalled more than 500,000 cars in the last year after some sensors failed to detect accurately passenger size and weight. Smart air bags were introduced in 2004 to address concerns that conventional airbags deployed so forcefully that they injured or killed children and small adults. The new air bags are supposed to determine the passenger’s weight and make adjustments accordingly—either by lessening the force of, or preventing deployment.
