National Teen Driver Safety Week is Oct. 18-24. Alarming statistics show the need for greater parental involvement in encouraging safe teen-driving behavior. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, each year more than 5,000 teens are killed in passenger-vehicle crashes. Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in America, and studies show that parents have the greatest influence over teen drivers. You can make a big difference by following these tips:
Set the best example. Your teen’s driving lessons begin long before their driver-education classes start. The safety and care you take behind the wheel will positively influence your teen’s behavior.
Get it in writing. AAA’s parent-teen driving contract outlines your joint agreement with your teen about driving privileges.
Talk it up. Make safe driving a daily topic of conversation. Remind your teen of important safety tips such as seat-belt use and the reduction of distractions.
Register to receive AAA New York’s Steering U Right. This online newsletter gives parents important teen driving-safety information.
