After a hard winter, it’s time to get out and enjoy the mild weather. Shedding the heavy coat is the bulk of our preparation, but your vehicle needs some specialized attention to get ready for the hot weather ahead.

Ray Tartaglione, owner of RJT Motorist Services, a AAA Approved Auto Repair facility on Westmoreland Ave. in White Plains, says there are some important items that should be done to shake off those winter doldrums. “The front end of a vehicle should be checked for damage from potholes,” says Tartaglione. In addition to damaged steering components, “wheels can be dented and tires can have bubbles.” He also recommends a power wash of the vehicle’s undercarriage to get rid of any residue from snow removal. The salt that’s left behind is very corrosive and could eat up quarter panels and other components, especially on vehicles from areas near the ocean where the salt air can do more damage.

Beyond these items, Tartaglione suggests performing regular maintenance items: Getting a tune up, changing the oil, checking the cooling system and flushing out coolant if necessary (usually recommended if the coolant has been in your engine for two years or more). The airconditioning system should also be tested in order to find problems before the sweltering heat sets in. Also, if your car is five years old or younger, a new item on the maintenance list should be checked, according to Tartaglione. “Cabin air filters help clean the air for the vehicle’s occupants and should be changed every year. You’ll usually find it located along the firewall.”

These simple items should keep you safely and serenely rolling along through the fun and sun of summer.
