Deadly Summer for Teen Drivers Demands Parental Diligence
Original Publish Date - July 2009

In a typical year, nearly 6,000 teens die in car crashes—that’s an average of 16 per day. With teens looking to fill idle time during the summer and getting behind the wheel to pursue leisure activities, the days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the deadliest for teen drivers and passengers. Statistics show that June, July and August are the deadliest months of the year, with 29 percent of all such deaths taking place during that time. Parents need to reinforce the driving safety message to ensure their teens’ safety this summer. Their message should include the following items: wear a seatbelt at all times, limit the number of teen passengers, reduce nighttime driving, no cell phones or text messaging when driving, no alcohol or drugs, eliminate all other driving distractions and maintain the vehicle in safe condition.
