The Gold Standard in Auto Repairs
Original Publish Date - October 2008

As the “Gold Standard” in providing state-of-the-art automotive service, the Approved Auto Repair (AAR) network launched by AAA six years ago continues to grow in quality and value.

More than 8,000 facilities belong to AAA’s national AAR program—including 43 stations within AAA New York’s network - ensuring that members can find reliable services throughout the country.

Before approving a station for its AAR program, AAA surveys the shop’s past customers and investigates complaint-history checks with the state Department of Motor Vehicles. Repair shops also must meet certain prerequisites to join the program, including certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, or equivalent, in engine repair, engine performance, electrical systems and brakes and suspension areas. They must also maintain up-to-date tools and equipment to handle repairs and services for today’s vehicles. Once a facility is accepted into the AAR program, it undergoes annual inspections by AAA automotive experts.

In return, the program guarantees more than just quality repairs. It entitles Club members who present their membership cards at an AAR facility to:

• A free maintenance inspection. When your vehicle is serviced or repaired at an AAR station, you can request a free inspection of automotive items that often contribute to roadside breakdowns. You will receive a written recommendation of any needed maintenance or repairs.

• Written estimate. You will receive a written estimate of repair costs. The actual cost of the work done on your vehicle may not exceed the written estimate by more than 10 percent unless authorized by you in advance. (Local and state regulations take precedence regarding notification of repair costs).

• Warranty. Most repairs, including parts and labor, are covered by a minimum warranty of 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first (unless otherwise noted on the repair order).

• Returned parts. On request, AAR stations will also return replaced parts as evidence of work performed, except for parts that must be returned to the manufacturer under a warranty or exchange program.

• Dispute resolution. AAA will investigate any dispute between a member and an AAR facility. AAA’s resolution decision will be accepted by the facility, but you are not bound by AAA’s decision and may seek recourse through other avenues.

AAA has set tough performance standards for facilities in the Approved Auto Repair network. For members, this translates into reliable and courteous service and a stress-free experience.
