Too much wind noise, loud brakes, pulling to one side, instrument-panel problems and excessive window fogging top the list of complaints that consumers have with their three-year-old cars, according to the latest Vehicle Dependability Study by J.D. Power and Associates.
Not surprisingly, consumers report 75 percent more problems after three years of ownership than they did after the first 90 days. What is surprising, however, is that the same problems consistently show up on the list of top complaints.
“These particular problems still prove challenging to manufacturers,” says David Sargent of the California-based market research firm. He notes that automakers could increase customer satisfaction by paying more attention to these issues before launching vehicles.
In the J.D. Power survey, Lexus, Mercury, Cadillac, Toyota and Acura had the fewest reported problems per 100 vehicles after three years, while Land Rover, Suzuki, Kia, Isuzu and Saab had the most.
