The Yen for Security

New technology will drive more car-buying decisions. In choosing your next car, it's likely that you'll pay a lot more attention to telematics- the two-way communications technology that opens your doors when you lock the keys inside, troubleshoots mechanical problems and tracks thieves. According to a new survey conducted by the Chicago-based consulting firm Accenture, 84 percent of American consumers want a vehicle with such high-tech features, especially if they improve safety and security.

Stolen vehicle tracking, remote door unlocking and vehicle diagnostics rank as the top three items on buyers' wish lists. For example, 57 percent of consumers want stolen vehicle tracking, but only 9 percent currently have it. Although only 31 percent now have systems to unlock their doors with a satellite signal and 23 percent have remote diagnostics, 55 percent want those features.
