Feds to require safety ratings on new-car window stickers.
Original Publish Date - December 2006

Under a new rule announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the window stickers on all new cars must carry the agency's safety ratings, beginning next September. The stickers will show the results of three different tests: front crashworthiness, side crashworthiness and rollover resistance. Under NHTSA's rating system, each vehicle receives from one to five stars in each test, with five stars indicating the best performers in that particular vehicle class.

The new rule applies only to passenger cars, sport-utility vehicles and vans; it exempts pickup trucks. However, Ford and General Motors plan to post the safety ratings on their trucks anyway. A few carmakers, including GM and Honda, already include some safety ratings on their window stickers, but not all three tests as mandated by the new rule.
