Toyota outshines competitors in initial quality study.

Strengthening its reputation as the industry leader in goof-proof manufacturing, Toyota captured best-in-class awards in 10 of 18 vehicle categories in the 2005 Initial Quality Study from J.D. Power and Associates. General Motors also had a strong showing, earning top ratings in five categories.

Toyota's winning models included the Prius (compact car), Lexus IS 300/IS 300 SportCross (entry-level luxury car), Lexus GS 300/GS 430 (mid-luxury car), Lexus SC 430 (premium luxury car), Scion tC (sporty car), Toyota RAV4 (entry-level SUV), 4Runner (mid-SUV), Lexus RX 330 (entry-level luxury SUV), Lexus GX 470 (premium luxury SUV) and Toyota Sienna (mid-size van).

GM's winning models included Chevrolet Malibu/ Malibu Maxx (entry-level mid-size car), Buick Century (premium mid-size car), Buick LeSabre (full-size car), GMC Sierra HD (heavy-duty full-size pickup) and Chevrolet Suburban (full-size SUV).

In its annual survey, the California-based market research firm asks more than 62,000 new-vehicle buyers to identify problems with their purchases after the first 90 days.

And this year's big losers? Suzuki, Mazda, Land Rover, Volkswagen and Porsche ranked as nameplates with the most reported problems. Coming in dead last, Suzuki had an average of 151 problems per 100 vehicles-nearly 30 percent higher than the industry average of 118.
